"Is it okay to root for failure?"
I've been friends with my co-worker Mike for years... and since we met, we've always been intrigued with sports teams that FAIL. He's a Padres fan, and I root for the Dodgers, so we talk a lot of smack during baseball season...
It's easy to root for failure of an opposing team...
Mike and I love the Lakers (a winning organization), so we also watch basketball. Maybe it's some sort of twisted sports-compensation that makes us take special notice when an N.B.A. team is tanking. If you follow sports, I'm sure you've heard of the Charlotte Bobcats, and how they have a chance to make history tomorrow...
Mike and I have had our eye on the Bobcats for a few years now, but this season, they are poised to take 'The Cake'. If they lose their final game tomorrow night, they will officially become the WORST TEAM IN N.B.A. HISTORY (winning percentage).
We are rooting for them to LOSE on National Television (TNT 8ET, 5PT).
Which leads me to the question... "Am I a bad person? Is it okay to root for failure?"
I would love to honestly say that "I would never root for someone to FAIL at achieving their goals."
But... in any sort of competition, there can't be a winner without a loser. (e.g.: WWII, NBA Finals 2009, Gryffindor v. Slytherin) In our world today, life (society) is all about competition. Any time we stand for something, we're rooting for the failure or something else! Of course, I don't want anyone to be harmed...
IT'S ONLY SPORTS (this time)
I don't foresee us getting back to the ways and philosophies of our harmonious native ancestors between now and the Bobcats' game tomorrow night, so... I'll sleep easy tonight in anticipation of tomorrow's tip-off.
GO KNICKS!
